AAAS Seminar/Talks: Microbial Genetic Jugglery: How Bacteria Become Antibiotic Resistant.

Presenter:
Julian Davies

Authors:
University of British Columbia

Abstract:
Microbes communicate not only by chemical but also genetic messages. They are the ultimate altruists since they share their genes with the community! It is this property that has been responsible for the development of multidrug resistant bacteria; antibiotic resistance genes can be shared by a variety of mechanisms to enhance survival under antibiotic stress. An understanding of the processes involved and the interplay of mutation and gene transfer show that antibiotic resistance is a more complicated process than expected. The study of bacterial resistance mechanisms has relevance to studies of drug resistance in viruses and cancer.
