The Intelligent design movement is a serious challenge to the scientific establishment. Some see this as a back door attempt to validate biblical beliefs. Others see it merely as a negative argument challenging Darwinian processes
without making any postive suggestions for dealing with issues that Darwininanism cannot satisfactorily deal with. The problem, in my view is that the Intelligent Design hypothesis as being marketed is understood to imply that God as an external designer is at work. On the other hand, if you think of the design element as an intrinsic characteristic of life forms at all levels, some objections from traditional scientists can be squarely dealt with. Who can argue that intelligence is not present among humans? Many will also agree that intelligence exists among animals and birds too. Then it becomes a question of how far down the evolutionary scale. Then one can also bring in issues like the role of bottom up causation and top down causation in the evolutionary process as proposed by leading scientists like George Ellis

I think that this is a promising idea, specifically at the level of the cell. The prospect of cellular intelligence (or cellular intentionality) has been getting thrown around quite a bit lately.
