I hope the moderator will excuse me for one brief non-ID related posting. One reason I enjoy this forum is because of its respectful, even professional, atmosphere (compared with other forums at least). I hope to contribute further to this atmosphere by adhering to an additional set of personal rules beyond those enforced on this forum. I thought I would share them so others might better gage what may sometimes be a lack of response on my part. The rules that I will adhere to are as follows:

1. The 50 Rule - I will not participate in threads that expand beyond 50 postings. It has been my experience that such lengthy threads usually stray beyond the original topic and I often find it frustrating to check in on a thread that is discussing things not clearly related to the original topic. By the time a thread gets to 50 postings, it is usually time to fire up a new thread with a new (perhaps related) topic.

2. The 24/1000 Rule - When someone posts something that is about 1000+ original words, they are usually striving to communicate a difficult, subtle, or controversial point. As such, I will wait at least 24 hours before replying to allow others the courtesy of reading the article without having my take color their reading. On other forums, people tend to rush responses that come off as attempts to spin the argument (as in a political campaign). Such rushed responses usually distract and interfere with an attempt to have others contemplate a point that is being made.

3. The Last Word Rule - In the literature, someone will publish an argument and sometimes a response article will follow in a later issue. Normally, the editor allows the original author a "last word" response to the response. If a thread is approaching 50 postings, I will offer the author of the thread the last word as I close out of that thread.

My attempt to adhere to these additional personal rules is an attempt to show respect to others that invest time and energy on this forum. I don't expect others to do likewise; I am only explaining why it is that sometimes in the future I may suddenly drop out of a thread. Furthermore, it is my intention to hold to the spirit of these rules, rather than the letter of the rules, as sometimes a very good discussion may be cause for me to bend them.

Mike,
Thanks for making these public. I think that these guidelines certainly fall within the spirit of Brainstorms.

I am going to lock this thread only because I want to prevent non-Brainstorm discussions.

However, I do think these ideas are informative and will leave them viewable for the edification of other Brainstormers.
