I'd like to propose a discussion thread on Stephen Wolfram's new book, A New Kind of Science. I'm getting the book today and will be reading it carefully over the next couple of weeks. The reason for this preliminary post is to ask the Moderator if this sort of mulling-over-Wolfram topic is acceptable Brainstorms fare.

I would love to see a discussion of Wolfram's new ideas. Preferably, the discussion will shed light on other topics that are relevant to Brainstorms participants. As long as the discussion persists in the Brainstorms ethos, I and my pal Yoda will absorb with great pleasure! [ 17 May 2002, 16:08: Message edited by: Moderator ]

Paul:
That's a great suggestion! You can count on me (if I ever succeed in getting hold of a copy . . .).

Well, I stopped reading diligently (no skipping) somewhere in the mid 600s, and started skipping. Then I quit reading altogether. This book was a great disappointment. If someone else would like to organize a discussion thread, I'll contribute a few thoughts, but A New Kind of Science just isn't that interesting or worthwhile.
