Conjectures Concerning Complexity and Hierarchy

by Phillip L. Engle
phillip.engle@att.net

ABSTRACT—The first part of this short paper discusses four types of physical systems, arranged in a kind of "physical spectrum" from "left" to "right": deterministic, tychistic, chaotic, and stochastic. It is proposed that physical systems of maximum complexity containing maximum information are associated with the middle of this "physical spectrum" (i.e., the "left edge of chaos" and the "right edge of tychism").

The second part of this paper proposes seven conjectured "laws of hierarchy" that are applicable to physical systems.

This paper has been extracted, condensed, and revised from by book FAR FROM EQUILIBRIUM, which can be found at www.laurelhighlandsmedia.com .

The ISCID Forums are aimed at generating insight into the nature of complex systems (e.g. biological complexity, organizational complexity, etc.) and the ontological status of purpose, especially from the vantage point of various information- and design-theoretic models.
