1. Avoid literature bombing
2. No advocating
3. No personal insults
4. No group insults
5. No politics

These policies are going to be strictly inforced over the next few weeks.

Please explain "Literature Bombing."

Recommend expanding "insults" to:
"No adhominem attacks: ie

". . .an appeal or argument addressed to the principles, interests, or passions of a man." Webster 1913
"Appealing to prejudice and emotion rather than to reason;
Attacking the character, motives, etc. of an opponent rather than debating the issue on logical grounds." Webster's New World 1999, 4th Ed.

Also related fallacies including "Begging the question" Or "Circular reasoning". See:

"Fallacy
. . . Under this heart come the ,so-called argumentum (a) ad hominem, (b) adpopulum, (c) ad baculum, (d) ad verecundiam, common in platform oratory, in which the speaker obscures the real issue by appealing to his audience on the grounds of (a) purely personal considerations, (b) popular sentiment, (c) fear, (d) conventional propriety., This fallacy has been illustrated by ethical or theological arguments wherein the fear of punishme~it is subtly substituted for abstract right as the sanction of moral obligation. (4) Peiitio principii (begging the question) or Circulus in probando (arguing in a circle), which consists in demonstrating ,a conclusion by means of premises which presuppose that conclusion."

I believe "literature bombing" refers to typing search terms into PubMed and cutting and pasting the results here. Everyone knows that one can find hundreds or thousands of vaguely related articles on PubMed. What is useful for discussion on this board is when someone has taken the time to actually look at articles in some depth, present summaries, etc., not just cut and paste search results.

I'm glad these rules are going to "inforced", but it might be better for all of us if they were ENforced. Just a thought.
