INTRO: Advances in computer technology depend not only on reducing the size and increasing the speed of semiconductor devices, but also by connecting them in ever more powerful and efficient networks. Perhaps the most intriguing are networks designed after the neural pathways of the brain. Some scientists have suggested that if artificial intelligence is to be realized, it will be through these computerized "neural networks". If realized, true artificial intelligence might be presented as a transitional form between non-intelligent matter and intelligent beings, suggesting possibilities for how natural intelligence may have evolved from mindlessness.

Questions:

1. Do you believe it is possible that an advanced neural network computer might someday become "self-aware" or have consciousness of some kind?

1a. If yes, what is the meaning of that "consciousness", as related to intelligent design by man?

1b. If no, what is the meaning of "consciousness", as related to intelligent design of a living mind by an intelligent agency?

2. Do you agree with the traditional wisdom that says "artificial intelligence is no match for genuine stupidity"? [Smile]
