ISCID is currently considering two significant upgrades to our membership offerings.

First, ISCID is thinking about starting a publishing house and providing members with free access to complete books online (books would also be printed). Or course this would be contingent on the sort of books that we publish...but hypothetically, does this interest you?

Second, we've been thinking, for some time, of providing our members with free access to the science portion of JStor (it is the only sort of online journal access that we can currently afford). This would allow members to read articles that are at least five years old from various science journals (e.g. Science). Not the most up-to-date stuff, but alas, we can't afford the most up-to-date stuff. Many in the academic world already have access to this service, in which case you should answer NO.

Would either of these services be of interest to you and make your more likely to either become or stay a member of ISCID?

Great idea. I would immediately renew my membership if these would be offered as incentives to members.

Cornell University, Stanford, (many universities), Los Alamos, NASA, govdotcom (dotcom?!), National Equipment Corporation, IBM, (along with many other publicly and privately held corporations), JAMA, Evolution. (You name it!), other than the way overrated PNAS and Nature, maintain extensive and continually updated and mostly accessible online libraries of original scientific research. Partly this is due to the desire for researchers to publish their results rapidly (as opposed to peer review online or print journals—which can take years, literally) and also due to the demand for immediate results (critical in competitive corps). The traditional avenues, ironically enough, largely invented in the late 19th century by the “Darwinists,” have failed to keep pace with the pace of scientific discovery. Inhouse, I could publish anything (even crap! mostly crap!) every week! Whereas my masters theses were never published! (Six freaking years of work which no one, not even my advisors or inquisiors were interested in! Or understood?! Damn! I'm bitter!)
OTOH seeing as how the most cited (here) online references on this board are to “TalkOrigns” and “ICR” I can’t help but feel that the “economics,” 4U, is ill-advised.
It purely and simply will not be used other than to refer to “abstracts” and “selective quotes,” or “links” no one actually reads!

The ISCID Forums are aimed at generating insight into the nature of complex systems (e.g. biological complexity, organizational complexity, etc.) and the ontological status of purpose, especially from the vantage point of various information- and design-theoretic models.
