Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder which gradually destroys brain tissues. This leads to loss of memory, language and logic skills, and eventually, all the brain functions that support life. Early-onset Alzheimer’s (emergence in 30’s to 40’s) is very rare, but it is recognized as a relatively common cause of mental deterioration among those aged 65 and older. Studies have shown that almost 50% of people that are 85 years old and above have Alzheimer’s.

A neuroscan of an Alzheimer’s victim will reveal an abnormal number of tangles and plaques in their brain. This is caused when enzymes accidentally snip the amyloid precursor proteins in the brain into two. Current research is focused on identifying and blocking the enzyme that triggers this process.

Early symptoms of Alzheimer’s include forgetfulness, lack of concentration, and difficulty finding words to communicate their ideas or feelings. As the condition worsens, the patient begins having trouble retrieving even long-term memory, such as the day of the month or directions to the house. This loss of control over one’s life triggers other emotional problems—withdrawal, anger, depression— which can deteriorate into paranoia or delusions.

Despite the slow decay of mental functions, Alzheimer patients can live for an average of 7 to 10 years.
