Assembly Problems

In artificial intelligence, this is the problem of finding the proper order in which to assemble the parts of complex objects. If the wrong order of assembly is chosen, there may be no way to add some necessary part later on without undoing some of the prior assembly. Solutions to assembly problems are called automatic assembly sequencing.

Assembly problems come up in a wide variety of situations including circuit design, mechanical design, artificial protein design and even biological design. The natural assembly of the bacterial flagellum is a nice example of an automatic assembly sequencing solution.
