Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a developmental disorder of inattention and distractibility, and could be accompanied by hyperactivity. In the past, many other terms have been employed to describe this condition, including hyperactive syndrome and minimal brain dysfunction. Based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), adults or children must have had manifested the symptoms before the age of seven years that have caused significant social or academic impairment. More recently, the attention has focused on adult forms of ADHD – which could have been underdiagnosed.

The causes of ADHD are not entirely clear but findings indicate that psychostimulants that help the release of dopamine and noradregenic tricyclics can actually help treat this condition. This has led some experts to consider that certain parts of the brain relating to attention are deficient in neural transmission.

At present there is no evidence that links ADHD with mortality. But studies also suggest that childhood ADHD is a risk factor for future conduct and substance abuse problems. These carries significant mortality and morbidity.

There is some controversy about the whether there is overdiagnosis of ADHD. This is compounded by the fact that treament often makes use of medications that can significantly modify personality.
