Cancer

Everyday, thousands of the body’s cells grow, divide and die. While some cells develop abnormally, due to damage to the DNA, the body is usually able to repair and correct problems. Cancer occurs when there is a sudden increase of abnormal cells, which continue to multiply and eventually outnumber the normal cells. While most cancerous cells lump together to form a tumor, those that involve blood and blood forming organs circulate through tissues.

There are different types of cancers which are determined by where the growth of abnormal cells begins. The most common cancers are skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.

Treatment, prognosis, and symptoms depend on the type of cancer. Skin cancer, for example, is the most common yet most treatable form of cancer, and is detected primarily through a biopsy of an irregularly shaped mole. Ovarian cancer, on the other hand, shows few symptoms and has a much lower survival rate.

While cancer can strike anyone, there are some who have increased risks due to heredity or unhealthy diet or lifestyle.
