Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the chemical processes that transform raw materials or chemicals (such as energy, chemicals, petroleum, and pulp) into products that are more useful or necessary to society (such as plastics, medicines, fuels, ultra-strong fibers, semiconductors, etc). Chemical engineering is also a significant ally in the fight for environmental conservation through its efforts to produce cleaner energy, to fully understand the impact that chemicals have on the earth, and to research and develop products that are biodegradable or easier to recycle.

Chemical engineering is closely linked with chemistry, and it is this combination of both science and technical knowledge that leads some to refer to chemical engineers as “universal engineers”. The skills required by these engineers encompass all areas of a product, from its design to its testing and maintenance. As such, a solid understanding of all the “unit operations” or individual processes such as distillation and chlorination is necessary. The three main physical laws that govern chemical engineering designs are: conservation of energy, conservation of mass and conservation of momentum.
