Computer Engineering

Computer engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the creation development, implementation and upkeep of both hardware and software systems for computers. The scope of computer engineering is fairly wide and includes issues in areas as diverse as manufacturing, computer graphics, databases, communications, robotics and much more. To this end, computer engineers can be focused on one or many of the various aspects of the field such as basic research, hardware design and production, application software design, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, integrated circuit design and microprocessor applications.

Computer engineering is a relatively new field, one that evolved at the start of the 1990’s due to the need for greater specialization as a result of the rapid surge in micro and mini computer technologies. It makes use of most of the knowledge and practices of both electrical engineering and computer science, so much so that it is integrated into standard electrical engineering courses by some universities, while other universities have simply chosen to merge their separate departments.

Unlike engineers of most other fields, computer engineers are generally not as well versed in the natural sciences since they often concentrate on the abstracted levels of logical and informational structure and design.
