Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the integration of engineering methods and the principles used for scientific management. This is done in order to create, enhance and implement integrated systems applicable to resources such as data, people, energy and equipment. Perhaps the most important objective of industrial engineering is to ensure that all elements of modern life are carried out in the most efficient manner possible.

The breadth of this field’s scope is incredibly vast, and the types of questions that an industrial engineer is trained to answer include, “How many copies of The Rolling Stones Greatest Hits should the local record store carry?” “What is the most effective way to shorten lines for bathrooms and snack counters in crowded stadiums?” “How many people should be scheduled to work the night shift in a baked goods factory so as to ensure sufficient production for supermarket orders?”

The success of industrial engineers relies on their ability to combine the knowledge and practices of mathematical and natural sciences with the knowledge and practices of business and psychology, thus enabling them to approach problems in a holistic yet practical manner.
