Information

Literally, the act of giving form or shape to something. When form is given to something, other forms are ruled out. As a consequence, information theory defines information as the reduction of possibilities or uncertainty. In classical information theory, the amount of information in a string of characters is inversely related to the probability of the occurrence of that string. The more improbable the string, the more uncertainty it reduces and the more information it conveys. Information defined in this way provides only a mathematical measure of improbabilty or complexity. It does not establish whether or not a string of characters conveys meaning, performs a function, or is otherwise significant.
