Interactionism

In philosophy of mind, interactionism is a form of property dualism, or emergent materialism. Descartes' distinctions between mind and body describe exclusive substances, which necessitates a means for these two substances to causally interact.

In the view of property dualism the interaction of mind and body is direct via the physical organization of brain states, from which mental states emerge. Thus while mental states are qualitatively immaterial, they are supervenient properties of the physical brain state. Causality in this view is physicalist (mental states emerge from physical states but are not causal of them.

In sociology, interactionism (or symbolic interactionism) is the view that the subjective aspects of social interactions collectively determine the objective roles of individuals and groups involved in social dynamics.
