Major Histocompatibility Complex
The region of chromosome six that encodes the two classes of proteins responsible for presenting peptide based antigens on the surface of nucleated cells. Three genes encode for the Class I MHC proteins HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-C, which present antigens to Killer T Cells, and for Class II MHC proteins, which are used only by immune system cells such as macrophages and present antigens to Helper T Cells.
