Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the various aspects of design, development and maintenance of mechanical components or systems through the use of physical principles. To put it more simply, one could say that the primary task of mechanical engineers is to build machines. Mechanical engineering is probably the engineering discipline with the broadest range of practical applications. Examples of areas that fall within its scope are laser technology, biomedical applications, robotics, the production and utilization of thermal energy, the design and production of cars, airplanes and boats, and the issues related to more efficient refrigeration or heating.

In order to achieve any of the abovementioned objectives, mechanical engineering employs the use of physical principles such as force, heat and conservation of mass so as to effectively monitor both the static and the moving properties and functions of their designs. The development of simulators is another common tool that facilitates the enhancement of performance. Mechanical engineers are focused on the production, distribution and utilization of power, whether in the form of systems that produce power (such as motor engines, nuclear reactors or gas turbines) or of systems that consume power for an end purpose (such as elevators or refrigerators).
