Michael Polanyi

Michael Polanyi was a physcial chemist who turned to philosophy at the height of his career when he saw how ideologies were being employed to hinder free scientific expression and inquiry.

With regard to complex systems, Michael Polanyi is best remembered for his seminal work on the functional logic that undergirds biological complexity which Polanyi argued is not reducible to physical and chemical principles. Rather, the information content of a biological whole exceeds that of the sum of its parts.
