Mitochondria Mitochondria are often referred to as "the powerhouses of cells". They are cellular organelles that perform oxidative phosphorylation in eurkaryotic animal and plant cells. The main function of mitochondria is to produce energy via respiration, where oxygen is used to turn food into a form of energy (stored in ATP) that the cell can use. Because mitochondria produce energy, they are abundant in tissues which require a lot of energy such as muscle.
