Neuron

Cell of the central nervous system [CNS], also called a nerve cell. Neurons comprise the primary cells of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. A neuron consists of a soma or body cell, a dendritic tree, and an axon. These cells communicate with each other by means of chemical and electrical synapses.

The soma or cell body contains the cell nucleus and is where most protein synthesis occurs. Afferent neurons convey information from tissues and organs to the central nervous system [CNS]. Efferent neurons transmit signals from the CNS to effect motor functions. Interneurons connect neurons in specific CNS regions.
