Neuroscience

Neuroscience is a life science, one that is concerned with understanding the function, properties, structure, development, pathology and genetics of a nervous system on all of its levels (for example, the molecular, the physiological, the biochemical and the cellular levels). Within the scope of a neuroscientist’s focus are both sick and healthy nervous systems so as to research and compare the attributes of each. Neuroscience also seeks to comprehend the behavioral and cognitive aspects of the nervous system. It is an interdisciplinary field and employs the knowledge and skills of specialists in psychology, biology, engineering, math and biochemistry.

Neuroscience is a generalized term that refers to a range of specialized and varied fields. These fields can be grouped into four main categories. The first is molecular and/or cellular neuroscience. The second is systems and/or cognitive neuroscience, which investigates the connection between the mind and the brain. It does so, for example, by observing behavior and by functional imaging. The third is developmental neuroscience, which studies the organization of nervous systems in animals in order to understand the mechanisms by which complex neural systems emerge throughout an organisms lifetime. The fourth is disease neurobiology, which is concerned with the identification and treatment of nervous system disorders.
