Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition that is characterized by the storage of excess body fat. The human body naturally stores fat under the skin and around the organs and joints. Fat is important for good health because it is a source of energy when the body lacks the energy that is needed to sustain life processes. It also provides insulation and protection for internal organs. But too much fat in the body can result in various health problems. Based on studies, individuals who are overweight or obese can run a greater risk of developing diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some forms of cancer.

Obesity is also a label for a weight range that is greater than what would generally be considered healthy for a given height. Obesity also identifies ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the chances of suffering from certain diseases and other health problems.

When it comes to adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate the body mass index (BMI). The BMI is used because it correlates with the amount of body fat for most people.

Based on the ranges, an adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, while an adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
