Objectivism

Objectivism is a philosophical school of thought that was first proposed by Ayn Rand, a notable philosopher and author of the twentieth century. She introduced objectivism to the general public via her highly successful novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. She carried on working on the philosophy throughout her life and evolved to writing technical non-fictional works on the topic.

Rand herself described objectivism as a philosophy for living on earth. It states that reality does not rely on man for its existence, and as such cannot be created or defined by him. Man becomes aware of the reality by means of his senses and he processes information by means of reason. It also states that the supernatural or mystical does not exist, that man has a moral responsibility to look after his own rational interests, that productive achievement is noble, that capitalism is the ideal political system, and that government should exist but with restricted powers. The name objectivism is derived from Rand’s belief that reality and values are objective, as opposed to subjective, and discoverable by rational beings.
