Ontology

The branch of philosophy known as "the science of being," dealing with the nature of being or kinds of existence. As such, it can be identified as or equated to metaphysics. In formalizing the nature of things and the distinctions between them, ontology is applied to fields such as theology, information science and artificial intelligence [AI].

In the twentieth century philosophers of science, particularly related to mathematics and particle physics, have explored the nature of being and attempted to establish fundamental guides for analyzing knowledge about being in a world that can be described in terms of both particle and wave, or by real, rational, irrational and even imaginary numbers. Ontology seeks to unify abstractions into an overall philosophy of what it means to exist - to be.
