Phenomenology

The study of structures of consciousness (experience) from the first-person point of view; the way things appear to us and the meaning we ascribe to that experience. Established in the early part of the 20th century, in recent philosophy of mind the term phenomenology is associated with the sensory qualities of experience, or qualia. i.e., "what it is like" to experience a quality of sight, sound, etc., and the structure of how types of experience impact thought, memory, imagination, emotion, desire and volition.

The basic intentional structure of consciousness makes use of a variety of forms of experience, thus phenomenology allows for a complex account of temporal awareness and can include descriptions of the structures and physical processes involved in conscious activity in the brain and how those are intertwined by the highest level of intentional awareness into relationships of meaning giving rise to thought, action and linguistic representation.
