Phylogeny

The evolutionary history that relates a collection of organisms. Phylogeny describes the origin and evolution of a species. One of the major research areas in evolutionary biology is putting together a reconstruction of the connections between all groups of organisms as understood by ancestor/descendant relationships. Phylogenetic reconstructions are based either on morphological or genetic similarities. The field of reconstructing phylogenies is called systematics.
