Post hoc, ergo propter hoc

Lat. After this, therefore because of this.

This error of argument in philosophy, or any other discipline, confuses or wrongly asserts cause and effect. For example:

  • Human beings came after bacteria, therefore human beings evolved from bacteria.

  • The organism mutated, that is why it survived.
are both examples of the argumentative fallacy accorded as post hoc, ergo propter hoc. The first is also a non sequitur.
