Proteomics

Proteomics is the study of all the proteins expressed by genes and found within and around the cells of an organism. It studies these proteins in their totality, the same way that genomics does with genes. Proteomics seeks to identify and characterize the functions of proteins interactions because, by doing so, scientists will have a much more comprehensive understanding of the system. It is comparable to analyzing data produced by a program instead of focusing on the program itself. As proteins are the functional molecules, research about them could prove vitally important to the effective diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as cancer, the development of improved biochemical diagnostic tests, and the provision of knowledge required to handle problems related to drug resistance or toxicology.

However, the challenges facing proteomic research are daunting. The fundamental problem is the sheer number of proteins in an organism, estimated at around one million. Studying samples in the hopes of finding differences that may be significant would require searching thousands of proteins for possibly one to ten of them that could be of interest.
