Surveying

Surveying is the branch of engineering that deals with the measuring of the physical characteristics of a specific plot of land. It does this through the use of modern and technical equipment so as to be able to produce highly accurate results. Surveyors are responsible for producing maps that can indicate boundaries and topography. Surveyors are also responsible for verifying the location of a proposed structure in relation to already existing structures. In order to accomplish these objectives, surveyors take advantage of the technological advances gained through global positioning satellites, as well as high-precision electromechanical and optical instruments. Technology aside, they also make use of elements derived from physics, mathematics, engineering, history and law. It is a specialized field of civil engineering and is a vital part of the process of designing and developing any system or structure.

Surveying can trace its roots as far back as man has recorded history. Its practices and principles have evolved through the generations, but in essence it was already being applied by the Egyptians in 3000 BC as a method of defining land boundaries after floods caused by the Nile River.
