essay contests have been cancelled until further notice is given.
Michael
Polanyi Essay Prize The
International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design (ISCID)
sponsors an undergraduate essay contest in honor of Michael
Polanyi (1891 - 1976). Polanyi was a physcial chemist who
turned to philosophy later in his career when he saw how ideologies
were being
employed to hinder free scientific expression and inquiry. With regard
to complex systems, Polanyi
is best remembered for his seminal work on the functional logic
that undergirds biological complexity and that
is not reducible to physical and chemical principles. The Michael Polanyi
Essay Prize is awarded each summer to the best undergraduate
article
on complexity, information, and design submitted during the previous
academic year. The article must be between 6,000 and 8,000 words
(excluding
abstract, bibliography, and notes). The prize value is $1,000. Submission
deadline: 1 June 2004. Submitted articles will be viewable on
the ISCID
archive and treated as submissions to the ISCID journal (PCID).

John von Neumann Essay Prize
The
International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design (ISCID)
sponsors a graduate essay contest in honor of John von Neumann
(1903 - 1957). Von Neumann was perhaps the twentieth century most brilliant
mathematician, transforming every subject he touched. He
made fundamental contributions to quantum mechanics, functional analysis,
and mathematical logic. He invented whole other fields, like game theory.
The von Neumann architecture of the digital computer still dominates
the field. With regard to complex systems, von Neumann is best remembered
for his seminal work on cellular automata and the insights these
computational
systems provide for self-reproduction. The John von Neumann Essay Prize
is awarded each summer to the best graduate article on complexity,
information, and design submitted during the previous academic year.
The article must be between 8,000 and 12,000 words (excluding abstract,
bibliography, and notes). The prize value is $2,000. Submission deadline:
1 June 2004. Submitted articles will be viewable on the ISCID
archive and treated as submissions to the ISCID journal (PCID).
